Learning From Modi Management For Public Actors

Uttar Pradesh (UP) assembly election 2017 result were declared on March 11, 2017. The BJP scored 325 out of 403- a landslide victory beyond imagination of even for PM Modi. This is point of analysis and learning for pubic actors to know what the factors associated with him that have brought him flying colours and what type of political marketing management that he applied to get stunning victory.
Reputation ( image) is the opinion that people, in general, have about someone or something, or how much respect or admiration someone or something receives, based on his past behaviour or characteristics.
Public has strong positive perception about PM Modi's reputation and image. One; he considers whole Indians as his family unlike our close biological or traditional family. Two; he is the corruption free public actor as there is no one to do corruption for. Three; hard worker. Four; one of the best orators and communicators. Five; deep and ground knowledge about public affairs managements and systems. Six; he adopts and embraces changes according to the need of time. Seven; he is a keen learner to keep himself updated. Eight; he has fire in belly to better the country and to do something new to improve quality of life of public particularly the poor.
Trust is a firm belief in the reliability, truth or ability of someone or something. Synonyms of trust are confidence, belief, faith. Trust and respect build relation between public and public actors. PM Modi is enjoying strong public trust. He is commanding huge public respect too. This is because of his selfless attitude, pubic welfare oriented acts, and deeds.
Political marketing management is the tool to bring all factors together to get desired results. He does advance meticulous planning and implements it rigorously. The BJP organising secretary UP worked hard day and night since last two years under his able guidance. Many Past elections indicate that PM Modi does not believe in short term gain and game of election management.
What he did in UP? First, he set social equations right. He snatched non-yadav OBCs from SP. He attracted non-Jatav SCs from BSP. He tried to bring muslim women to his side by raising" Triple Talaq" issue in women's favour. Farmer community (Kurmi) and other Most backward class gave the desired base to PM Modi. Once the base was ready, floating voters came to him, as he proved himself in winning position.
Public likes and admire decisive leaders. Demonetisation has worked in favor of the BJP. PM Modi marketed it as the surgical strike against black money which is the cause of our economic misery. Demonetisation is risky, tricky, bold and difficult decision.
He projected demonetisation as the pro-poor act and fight against corruption. Strong opposition by other political parties helped him a lot to convince voters that he is being opposed because he is trying to reduce and kill corruption. He got huge public support and vote in spite of pain of standing in queue by public due to demonetisation. His demonetisation narrative has made him the sole claimant of the pro-poor plank.
Poverty has neither caste nor creed. It simply separates haves from have-nots, the satisfied and opulent from the economically battered. " Garibi Hatao" is an old slogan to help the poor. But, it was more on paper rather than a real act to alleviate poverty.
PM Modi, in his very first speech in the Parliament said, " The era of poverty alleviation was over. The age of poverty elimination had begun." Again, he, in his first address from the Red Fort, said governance is nothing if it is not about improving the quality of life for the poor every day. This shows his pro poor mind set and his deep concern about this issue.
To help the poor and to bring them out of poverty, he started many projects and programmes. Mudra is one such scheme of economic empowerment. The opening of Jan Dhan accounts, as a drive in mission mode, was another step to enable the poor to send benefits into their accounts directly as DBT. Ujjawala scheme gave 52 lakh homes deposit-free connection in UP. There are many more such steps. These are just indicative. The PM means what he says,' sab ka saath, sab ka vikas'.
There are many such issues raised time to time to refresh voters' memory about their bad experience to get their favourable mandate. Very tactfully PM Modi reminded the voters of the woes suffered by them to get favourable votes. And he was successful in his political marketing approach.
Good Governance and corruption are inversely related. If one increases, the other decreases in the same proportion. PM Modi is following a policy of zero tolerance against corruption. At G20 meeting held in Hangzhou, China, in September 2016, PM Modi called for the eradication of tax havens for economic offenders and a crackdown on black money hoarders, money launders and tax offenders.
GoI is focussing on clamping down on black money in the country and plugging the loopholes that make economic offences possible. For this, GoI has announced several measures in series. the next expected in this series of actions, is strict implementation of stringent Benami Act as he hinted during 2017 election campaign.
In UP election of 2007, main issue was Law & Order. In 2012, main contesting point was corruption and misuse of money. Now in 2017, core issue is Good Governance and Development. Past three elections gave majority to a single party and the ruling party was defeated.
At this time, election in UP was a triangular contest. BJP, BSP and SP(INC) fought in a well organised manner and neck to neck. Each of them tried to convince voters about the good governance provided and development done in past while in power and plan for it if gets chance to serve again.
In our family, we often discuss three good qualities we see in new people we meet. Using that mindset, there are more than a fair share of qualities to respect in Modi.
Some best qualities of PM Modi's are: One; he struggled and fought many battles to reach where he is. Two; he is towered over current political leaders, both inside and outside his political party. Three; he reject conventional thinking and politics. He promotes innovative style of functioning. Four; he has dismissed divisive agendas and offered an inclusive worldview.
From management angle, personality politics overpowered party politics. Voters voted the one who has good track records and public trust for good governance, development and management.
What is learning and take away points for public actors. One; we must build good reputation and trust by good acts and deeds. Two; we should prefer advance long term meticulous planning over short term. Three; a well calculated implementation is the key to success. Four; framing right issue and action points should be well researched and relevant. Five; communication and connecting must be easy and simple.
Reputation, Trust and Management are three interrelated elements. Public actors practice all three ingredients in tandem to achieve favourable results. These are visible facts and acts form management point of view which bring flying colours to PM Modi frequently.
